I am sick of having to list off my never-ending list of allergies. It always seems like there is one more to add to it. Often, I am afraid to say how many foods I am allergic to or intolerant of. When asked for allergies before going to a dinner, I feel uncomfortable to have someone go out of their way to accommodate my needs. So my husband came up with the neat idea that I should have a business card listed with my allergies to hand out when I am invited to a dinner.
My own allergy card would save me the long-winded conversation that I am required to have after the dreaded question arises. I feel strange, different, and uneasy as I list foods that others eat all the time. I don’t like having to make things difficult for people. The person is already welcoming me into their home, or to their event, and making them change their menu feels awkward and selfish. Yes, they did ask, but it still feels weird. I just want to be normal. I don’t like having to respond to that question. That is why the allergy business card is something to consider. Maybe I should take my husband up on his offer to make some for me.
